FIFA just got a little Murkier

Sports had been getting corrupt over the years, particularly in the administrative field and this was further fuelled when FIFA suspended the president of the Asian Football Confederation, Mohammad bin Hammam for life for trying to bribe the officials to vote for him during the FIFA presidential elections earlier in the year, in which he was contesting against the current president Sepp Blatter. However, in a significant turn of events, it was revealed that Blatter himself tried to bribe the officials from the CONMEBOL and CONCACAF zone to vote for him who have come up substantial statements in the press and claim to have enough evidence to prove them.

Sports and its Impact on People’s Lives

Sports is something that can transcend all the barriers of age, rage, caste, creed, gender and every other thing that tends to differentiate one human being from another and bring them together. Sports is one of the biggest unifiers in the world and when a sporting event takes place in which a country is being represented, people forget all the bitterness and sorrow of their life and every other thing just to lend their voice of support to the one representing the whole country. In countries like India and Pakistan, cricket is like a religion and when a match is on, everyone seems to forget about their lives and cheer their team on from wherever they are and that is the essence of sports – a true unifier.

Rowing – One of the toughest sports

Rowing or crew as it is popularly known is rated among one of the world’s toughest and most strenuous sports. It requires tremendous physical fitness, stamina and mental strength to be a good rower. A standard 2000m race taking 7 minutes on an average might sound to be an easy thing, but racing neck-to-neck with other teams that drains a person of the last drop of energy, proves to be a different story. Towards the last 500m of a race, it is sheer mental grit that makes a person pull through, for physical resources are already depleted by then. No wonder only the fittest and ablest become good rowers.

The Century of Centuries

The Cricket world has been abuzz with talks of Sachin Tendulkar scoring his 100th century in the ongoing England-India Test series. Wasim Akram recently expressed his wish that Sachin should score his 100th century in the home of cricket, the Lord’s cricket ground. To commemorate this mammoth achievement, Coco Cola has announced that it will manufacture 6.5 million cans of the drink having pictures of the batting legend. Sachin is currently Coco Cola’s “Happiness Ambassador” and it is almost fitting for the company to take this step. Each can will display a picture of one of the many milestones in Sachin’s illustrious career.

Kicking and Boxing- A Deadly Combination

Anything that combines boxing with kicking is bound to get great reviews. The first thing to remember in kickboxing is that accuracy and speed must be achieved first before power can be attained. Most power however does not come from the arm; instead it comes from a twisting of the body and legs, which puts your body weight behind the punch. A bend in the knees and twist of the hips help make the action fluid. Always remember to aim 6 inches beyond the chin rather than just impact for maximum effect, that is rather than pulling back on impact let your fist carry you further.

Drug abuse-Who's at fault?

In recent sports news, drug abuse is fairly common. Performance enhancing drugs are regular practice, and there is a crackdown on it.
But before we start to point fingers at the people who have been found to be taking these drugs, we need to start asking if this is a solution to the drug problem. Is it the athletes that are at fault? The competition is fierce, and the rewards system is biased only to the winner. Nobody remembers the person who comes in second or third, so it is only normal that everyone strives to win. The system needs to provide sufficient recognition to all competitors.
